Ministerial education (SALM)

The School for liturgical-musical animators is annexed to the Pontifical Ambrosian Institute of Sacred Music and provides a two-year course geared to the complete education of people in charge with a liturgical service mainly in the music, singing, proclamation and animation fields, for a competent performance of their own ministry in favour of the assemblies. Two specialized courses are active: Liturgical musicians / Music animators and for Readers / Commentators / Directors of celebration/ Liturgy leaders.

Each year includes Assisted teaching activity (A.t.a) for 126 hours of collective lessons in the main subjects of interest and 24 individual lessons of instrument or vocality. At the end of the prescribed course of studies, the Certificate of Liturgical animator in the chosen specialisation is issued. Near ordinary courses there are other complementary courses (PropeSALM, ProfiSALM, KinderSALM)

» Readers / Commentators / Directors of celebration

As the liturgical assembly can’t do without readers, the education of lay ministers for proclamation, animation and direction of assemblies is an unavoidable ecclesiastical need. The education programme aims to provide communities with instruments to give an adequate answer from the biblical, liturgical and technical point of view. The common educational path may be complemented by individual lessons of vocality or instrument (piano, organ, guitar, flute).

» Liturgical musicians / Music animators

As music is a fundamental element of the liturgical language, it is necessary, for a correct service to celebrating assemblies, not only to learn basic elements of the musical language, develop a ‘musical ear’, have the necessary instruments for a critical assessment of the repertoire, and use vocality or play an instrument, but also know the dynamics of liturgy. Individual lessons of vocality or instrument (piano, organ, guitar, flute) complement the common educational path.
